Planetary Housing

HVT were engaged to do an appraisal on the repair of a cast iron planetary housing from an underground dump truck. The housing was severely damaged and warped, and a failed weld repair from another company exacerbated the housing’s poor condition.

HVT devised bracing to bring the housing back into alignment (6mm out of round and dropped by 3mm), after which HVT have then forge welded the housing at temperatures in excess of 800°C. The housing was then machined to bring the housing back into alignment with the flange faces/PCD, and after significant planning, preparation, forge welding and machining, HVT successfully repaired the cast iron housing and it was returned to service.
