Bringing Back the MT4400 FWG Spindle (452 – 0419)

High fatigue damage restored for under 10% of replacement cost

As part of ongoing work with a multinational remanufacturer, HVT was tasked with recovering a MT4400 Front Wheel Group (FWG) Spindle (452 – 0419) flagged for scrap. The part, valued at $61,500, was showing heavy fatigue in multiple stress zones. Rather than replace it, the client turned to HVT for a high-integrity repair that kept cost, downtime and logistics under control.

What we found: Fatigue cracks, worn bores, and failed journals

The spindle had sustained significant damage in critical load areas.

  • Cracks at the post radii and king-pin radii.
  • King-pin bores worn beyond tolerance.
  • Bearing journals damaged and degraded from long-term use.

Without intervention, this would have meant full replacement, and all the delay, cost, and shipping complexity that comes with it.

What we did: Structural crack repair and dimension rebuild

HVT rebuilt the spindle using a layered, precision-engineered approach:

  • Cracks in fatigue zones repaired with targeted weld methods.
  • King-pin bore was rebuilt via internal diameter weld-up and re-machining.
  • Damaged bearing journals restored using thermal spray coatings.
  • Final machining brought all dimensions back to OEM spec.

The work was completed in-house, using HVT’s full weld, spray, and machining capabilities to deliver an end-to-end solution.

What it delivered: Fully restored function, massive cost avoidance

  • Crack’s eliminated and all wear failures rebuilt to standard.
  • OEM tolerances met with zero dimensional compromise.
  • Completed at under 10% replacement cost.
  • Clients kept the asset in rotation and out of the scrap bin.

When others scrap, HVT restores

This job proved that with the right tools and discipline, parts written off by others can be recovered to full performance. For the client, it was a clear win on cost, lead time and sustainability.

Let’s assess it before you replace it. HVT strives to turn worn-out assets into operational resources.
