A series of 6 cylinder heads from a Liebherr crane were suffering moderate to severe cracking due to thermal fatigue. The cracks had formed at the circumference of the valve stem, with the more extensive failure propagating down the bore. All 6 cylinder heads were forge welded, machined and pressure-tested successfully, and the crane returned to service.
